When I first saw the quad mace I was immediately drawn to it. Traditional weights have never been my thing, and this is another piece of unconventional training equipment that can keep me interested long enough to reap the benefits. Styled after the Indian “Gada” clubs that Persian warriors and Indian wrestlers alike relied on to gain strength, this is a fantastic update for today while staying true to the history of the mace. At 25.5 pounds, this is a beast of a mace and the cast head mimicking a design by Alex Grey ties the whole thing together wonderfully. The slip resistant ash wood makes you pay attention to your grip, while giving a natural feel instead of the typical rough steel of other maces.
The mace has a host of benefits that Hindu warriors have known all along. Increased grip strength, strong and healthy shoulders, rotational core strength and a total body strength workout while also being a punishing cardiovascular tool. The quad mace offers so much more than I could have imagined at first, and was surprised at what a workout it was. Truly a functional piece of equipment, this is leaps and bounds above a sledge hammer, and you don’t even need to hammer it down on top of a tire to get the full benefit. It is a brutal piece and another one that has become absolutely paramount in my collection. Able to swing it in a small space, quickly, quietly and all the while delivering me an experience like no other.
Though the quad mace is certainly capable of giving you a full body workout, I wanted to start swinging it to pay attention to my notoriously stiff and popping shoulders. After a few swings I noticed my shoulders feeling like they had been actually been lubricated. I don’t usually make the type of motion you would with a mace and my shoulders were very happy because of it. My triceps on the other hand were on fire after only about a dozen 360 swings. It’s as punishing as it is rewarding.
The quad mace is less of a workout tool and more of a powerful force for physical enlightenment and total human optimization. The meditative quality of the 360 swing with this mace quickly humbles the body with it’s stern teachings. I thought I was strong, and again Onnit gives me a tool that humbles my body and helps me to clear my mind. The quad mace is another perfect piece of functional equipment, giving you real life strength, along with a full body workout in a limited amount of time.
I couldn’t have had this come at any better of a time. Unconventional training with equipment like kettlebells and this mace have opened a door for me to release frustration, pent up energy and to improve myself over the course of time. I’ve started craving the workout, the burn, the pump, and thanks to these tools I can get it in wherever I can fit it in. In between naps, feeding, etc, I can get a full body workout that addresses my body, mind and spirit. Because of these tools I am more peaceful, more present and more able to serve my family in a calm and collected way. All hail the quad-God!
