Long story short, Steven is co-owner of one of the coolest companies in skateboarding right now, Northern Co. Their aesthetic is everything that drove me into skateboarding to begin with, raw style, creativity and good vibes. I had to learn a little more about the guy behind one of my favorite brands, and was lucky to get in touch with him.
1. Tell us about what you do, who you are, and how you balance your career with being a dad?
I am co owner of the northern company skateboards. I’m a husband, father, and skateboarder. Being selective with my time management let’s me be able to balance everything. The kids are in bed by 8:30 so I end up being more of a night owl to get the brands work completed, get my skateboarding in, or watch a movie with the wife.
2. What does being a modern-day dad mean to you?
I think it’s pretty cool that due to the fact that I still am skateboarding when I can, I’m still a kid with them. I also have learned the best websites to get the cheat codes for the my little pony blind bags so they don’t get doubles. Using a smart phone to crack some codes is pretty modern day isn’t it?
3.How did becoming a father change your life?
It really made me appreciate what I have, and the time I have. It changes your priorities. It made me a better husband. Taught me some patience.
Any time I get on my skateboard is really appreciated. It’s far less than it was years ago. I also don’t hate snow as much. It’s fun with the kids, otherwise I can’t stand it.
4. Whats the greatest part about being a dad?
The greatest part about being a dad is when your children randomly like something odd that you like. My daughters like beef jerky. It’s such a small stupid thing but it’s so cool. Those are my kids, ya know? It’s pretty cool when they stick up for each other too. My wife and I are both only children so the sibling thing is a new world to us both.
5. Can you share a funny story about being a father?
When my wife was having our second daughter phoebe, we had a home birth. My oldest daughter Aislinn was asleep. Two hours of our dog barking, midwives running around. My wife giving birth, yelling. She stayed asleep. So it’s 1pm. Everyone leaves. My wife and phoebe are on the couch. Aislinn walks out into the bedroom. “Where’s mommy?” ” In the living room with your sister. “. She walks in. Unfazed. “Oh she’s cute!” Then goes back to bed.
6. What advice can you give any new father out there?
Nobody can tell you what you can expect. I think I hit a little depression for a few weeks. Just getting used to not having the freedom I had before, but you learn to manage your time and it all works out.
Thanks so much Steven! I know exactly what you mean. It takes some getting used to, but it’s the best, most rewarding job in the world. Thanks again to chatting with us, glad you could take part!
