“Rad Dad Feature: HOYAROC”

Legendary NYHC bass icon Hoya Roc is a force to be reckoned with. Member of the legendary hardcore group Madball, this is a man that needs no introduction. Father of two and still a very much active member of the New York Hardcore scene, it was our pleasure to connect with him for a little bit on this feature.

1. Tell us about what you do, who you are, and how you balance your career with being a dad?

They call me HOYAROC, I play bass in a band called MADBALL and Hazen Street. The way I’m able to balance being a father is with the help of my family, without them you would see my 6 year old Bass teching to me on stage. (hahaha)

2. What does being a modern-day dad mean to you?

Being a father means a lot to me, I was lucky to grow up with a good family but I had many friends that came from broken homes…I try and take oldschool approach and mix it with 2015. I don’t think of being a dad, I just do what my heart says.

3.How did becoming a father change your life?

It made me a better man. I never had something in life that made me feel as good and holding and watching my son’s grow. It made me see why life is an amazing thing.

4. Whats the greatest part about being a dad?

Feeling my boys hug and kiss me, wathing my son’s grow, talk, walk, etc.

5. Can you share a funny story about being a father?

Me having 2 kids is still funny for me in general!!! But I have busted my ass on hot wheels, Legos thrown at me…but I remember putting my son on my shoulders so he can see and realizing his pamper was full after it soaked my neck!!!!

6. What advice can you give any new father out there?

Love your kids and just keep trying, I’m a single dad and it’s hard sometimes but I’m glad I got good people around me to help fill in the gaps.

What else?!

I got a t shirt company, check it out at I print everything MYSELF in my house!!! Check it out!!!

Thanks so much man. It’s been a pleasure to hear your music for all these years and even better to know you on the father side. Salute!
