I have featured hot sauces in the past, so this isn’t my first whirl around the fire. I am known to my friends and family as a true hot sauce aficionado and usually have new flavors for them to try any time they come around. I am constantly on the search for a hot sauce that has the perfect mix of heat and flavor and I feel like it is my duty to let you know when I have found another favorite. Modern Day Dad, Johnny McLaughlin is an artist in the truest sense of the word. His company “Heartbreaking Dawns” is a great example of how passion for all things creative can turn into a business with a life of its own. His all-natural artisan sauces and spice blends are world class, and as fiery as they are delicious. We featured Johnny as one of our Rad Dad’s recently, but his sauces are so incredible, they deserve a feature all their own.
I was lucky enough to be able to sample four of Heartbreaking Dawns delicious sauces, and wanted to give you the full on review as my mouth was absolutely blown away.
1. Heartbreaking Dawns Jalapeño Pineapple. I started with this one as I deduced it would be the most mild of the four. I was right, but this packed a punch in an entirely different way. With the backdrop of fresh pineapple, and the finish of a jalapeño, this sweet sauce is definitely a one of a kind. This sauce would go great on just about anything. I was surprised how well the flavors mix together, the sweetness of the pineapple with its hit of tart and the subtle spice of a jalapeño. It might not be the hottest sauce in the collection, but it certainly would be a crowd pleaser.
2. Next I tried the “Bad Brains; Fireburn Babylon” Hot sauce. This sauce was released together with the Bad Brains most recent album, “Into the Future” and it packs as much punch as the music itself. The flavor is very reminiscent of the Bad Brains sound, a sweet heat with a caribbean undertone. A delicious and firery pepper, the Red Scotch Bonnet mixed with papaya give it the perfect balance between flavor and heat. I have always been a fan of sauces that use fruits as their base, as it makes a much more desirable flavor, with a broader taste range. This is excellent. I had it this morning on eggs, this afternoon on a burrito and I am sure I will find a place to squeeze it in at dinner time. This is a great hot sauce, with just enough heat to be able to enjoy it and not too hot so that all you taste is the heat. Anyone can make a sauce that is so hot all you taste is fire, not everyone can blend that heat with delicious flavors to make it both pleasing for the fire craver, yet tolerable for those that just want the flavor.
3. I have tried quite a few ghost pepper sauces, and until now I thought that they were mainly a novelty. It seemed like people wanted to make a sauce that was more of a “dare” than a condiment. For the first few seconds I could tell the naga bhut jolokia/ghost chile pepper was a pepper id like to explore more of its taste, but thought that other than one drop, I never might be able to. I mean, they are HOT. When I opened up the 1841 Ghost Pepper Sauce, I expected more of the same. Fortunately for me this was not another sauce that was all heat without the flavor. While this sauce is extremely hot, it is paired with a blend of pear and apple, a brilliant choice for this spicy pepper. The subtle and sweet fruit flavors pair perfectly with the burn that only a ghost pepper could produce. Sometimes I really crave the fire, and this is hands down, the best ghost pepper sauce I have ever tasted. A lot of that has to do with the fact that I can actually taste it! It’s not all fire, its all fiery flavor.
4. Hotter than the previous record holder, the Trinidad Scorpion Butch T is one of the hottest peppers known to man. One of the first commercially available Trinidad Scorpion hot sauces, Heartbreaking Dawns original 1498 Trinidad Scorpion Hot Sauce pairs up the Trinidad Scorpion with some Scotch Bonnets to create a blend of bold heat that finishes with an amazing flavor. Combining Apricot, Blueberry and Carrot this sauce runs you through the ringer when it comes to flavor sensations. The Trinidad Scorpion is known for its floral like flavor, so the fruit blend really balances everything out. The bold and high heat of this sauce makes it a favorite with me, but again isn’t so hot that its intolerable. Anyone can play a game of “how hot can you make it”, but a true hot sauce lover appreciates a sauce that is bold in its heat index, but just as flavorful and tasteful as well. I want to taste the sauce, not the heat, and Heartbreaking Dawns has found a way to turn some of the hottest peppers into some of the tastiest sauces.
