“Garbage Day Umbrellas”

Here’s another easy project to do with your children.   They’re umbrellas made from the left over 2 litter bottoms you’ve cut up for your Garbage Day Garden.

This is what you’ll need.

  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Zip Ties
  • A stick (bamboo works well)
  • A child

FIRST

Line the bottoms up roughly so you have an idea what it might look like.  Take this time to choose a color pattern.  You can stagger the green and clear ones however you want to make a design.

SECOND

Put two bottoms together and punch a hole where they meet.  It doesn’t matter where you start.  I used the smallest setting on my hole punch.  You can use a drill or whatever you need to make a hole, but I found that this tool makes quick and clean holes easily.

See the pics below:

REPEAT

Add more and work your way around until you’ve made a circle (hexagon).  You can go around as many times as you see fit.  I have a couple small umbrellas and a couple larger ones.

MAKE A STEM

Work a screw through the center and screw into the bamboo.

DONE

Now we’ve used up the 2 litter bottoms and effectively reused the entire 2 litter bottle. These umbrellas also won’t block the rain, the water can still get through the cracks.
