Everyday Parenting Tips & Tricks

“An open letter to my daughter”

Periodically I will write my daughter a letter. It’s something I’ve always done, especially when she could use a boost or if I just want to let her know how special she is to me.

I think this is a great practice for any parent, a time to reflect on your kids and really let them know how much they mean to you. My daughter has saved the notes I have given her and I’ve caught her reading them on many occasions. It is always the right time to uplift our kids, so give it a try and see how much it can mean to both of you.

Here’s a recent one, and I know she’s proud that I’m posting it to share with all of y’all.

Dear Daughter,

You have been such a big help this summer and I just want to thank you. I never knew someone that could be so hardworking and patient as you have been. You’ve just jumped right into the role of being the best big sister any one could ask for. I appreciate your willingness to help, and dedication to being the same sweet girl you always are.

I love your cheerful attitude and it makes me happy to always hear you singing. Singing is the sign of a happy person and it makes me proud to know you are happy.

I’ve watched you grow from a tiny baby like your sister into the young woman you are today and it just makes me so proud to be a part of your life. You are smart and creative, you are strong inside and out, and you are one of the most thoughtful people I have ever met.

Before you were born I had no idea what it would be like to be a dad. I didn’t know if I would be a good one or bad one but you helped me become the father I am. You are so special to me I always wanted to do my best to make your life great.

Just as many things as I have taught you, you too have taught me about being a good person. I truly love and appreciate you.
I love you so much and I always will. You have taught me the meaning of unconditional love and because of you I love learned to share that with your mom and sister as well.

I’m happy we have such a special family, even if I am the odd man out in a house full of girls!

You have so many talents and you will find that you have so many more. You are a singer, dancer, artist and explorer of the world! You are a master on your scooter, a legendary Pokemon collector, and creative genius when it comes to making videos. You are a whiz at school, showing that you’ve got what it takes to be a superstar in any subject you choose. You are talented in math, science, reading and even p.e. Class.

You are brave, beautiful, smart, kind and I’m lucky to have you in my life. Thank you for all that you do, thanks for being you and most of all thanks for all your help this summer.
